Lee Kwan Yew took control of Singapore when the Brits relinquished it. He first agreed for it to be part of the contemporaneously independent Malaya, under - what was that bloke's name, a Chinese Muslim ? But later, when Mahathir Mohammed took over Malaya, fell out with him (not surprisingly - Mahathir was an intransigent power-lover) and set up the little island as a separate state. From then on he guided it with great determination and a very wise and steady hand to it's present prosperous and very well ordered condition. He didn't have to be quite as ruthless as Mahathir in suppressing opposition, but he was firm and quite a few opponents spent many many years in Changi prison. His message was : "no corruption" and the result made every law-abiding, hard-working Singaporean, economically comfortable. He devised a very successful capitalist socialism, long before China, and made all his people proud of their country, and rightly so. It was he who told that little Chinese Commie bloke - what was his name? - now revered in the PRC as the father of "opening up" to do it, when the little chap was visiting Singapore to get away from the horrors of the Cultural Revolution. I lived in Singers for a year and used to like to read Lee's daily articles in the Straits Times : he was always spot on target. I could go on for ages about this great man, but it's my bed-time. Who is lee kuan yew?
Lee Kuan Yew, GCMG, CH (Chinese: 李光耀; Pinyin: Lǐ Guāngyào; born September 16, 1923; also spelled Lee Kwan-Yew), was the Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore from 1959 to 1990.
Since stepping down from office he has remained one of the most influential politicians in Singapore. Under the administration of Singapore's second prime minister, Goh Chok Tong, he served as Senior Minister.
