Are Yew trees protected in church's (UK)? Ewe(sheep) LOL?

I was told that they were due to ancient archery laws (Henry 8th). I live next to a church and they are causing a lot of shadow to fall on my house. My neighbor said I could do nothing as they are protected. Could they be punned or thinned without the need for permission or could the church thin them without seeking permission? If permission is needed, were is it obtained.

Your local council has probably placed TPO (Tree Preservation Orders) on these trees. There is a massive fine for touching them without permission. Ask your council to provide you with contact details regarding these trees.
Reply:what us trees
Reply:Yes they are protected as some are well over 400 yrs old, i think you should move rather than cut down any trees
Reply:They say Yew trees are planted in churchyards to ward off evil spirits. They are bound to have a preservation order on them so unless they are overhanging your garden there is not much you can do.At least you back onto a churchyard and not some grotty buildings.

Try having a tactful word with the vicar.Explain about the light and ask if they might need some pruning to tidy them up a bit.
