What is a yew?

What is a yew?
I have a yew tree in my garden, a friend gave it to me. It is about 18 inches high and growing well, it has red berries in the autumn. It has very small leaves,and it will grow fairly high say 15 feet. Most churches have them in their yards churchyards that is. When you have trees or bushes with small leaves it makes your garden appear bigger/longer and trees with large leaves make it appear smaller/shorter, thats just an extra bit.
